How It Works!

We at FloScan are constantly beating our chests about the fuel savings that can be generated using our range of products. It is not unusual for us to receive testimonial boasting savings of 30% or more. Recently, it was  bought to my attention that many boat owners may like to know how our product operates to deliver these savings.

FloScan incorporates a unique opto-electronic turbine flow transducer in the critically important flow measurement portion of the system. It utilizes a neutrally buoyant rotor, which spins with the fuel between V-jewel bearings. Rotor movement is sensed when notches in the rotor interrupt an infrared light beam between an LED and phototransistor. The flow signal is sent to the meter's microprocessor, which computes this data as litres-per-hour and tracks the total amount of fuel burned since your last fill up on a digital LCD readout. When we also add a GPS reading our 95000 Series also displays a reading of litres per nautical mile.

Every vessel has an operating RPM that provides the greatest distance covered burning the least amount of fuel.  Litres-per nautical mile represents peak efficiency, however, this figure cannot be determined without an instrument that can provide real-time data on fuel consumption while underway. No matter what conditions or work undertaken by a vessel a skipper that has this information will always be able to target a rev range that delivers peak efficiency under those conditions.   An engine running just outside peak efficiency RPMs will dramatically increase the litres-per-nautical mile it will deliver.

BREMERTON — Thousands of gallons of diesel fuel can be saved by slowing Bainbridge Island-Seattle ferries by a couple of knots in off-peak runs, state officials say — and they're going for it. A four-week fuel conservation study confirmed that at least a million gallons of fuel can be saved annually, about 90,000 gallons a month,

Foss Maritime, one of the largest tug boat companies with over 200 vessels operating worldwide, tested FloScan Fuel Computers on the M/V Justine Foss powered by twin EMD 12-645 2150 hp engines. This tug operated between Washington and Alaska running approximately 1000 nautical miles each way. The Justine Foss made 8 round trips using approximately 80,000 gallons of fuel per trip.
